Competition Rubric

Awards

Presenters of oral or poster presentations will be judged by faculty and/or post-doctoral judges based on the criteria below. Presenters will be ranked by the average scores from judges, and the top three presenters of each presentation category will receive an award.

People’s Choice Award for each presentation category will be determined by votes from audience via a Qualtrics survey sent out on the conference day.

 


 

Oral Competition – Judging Criteria

Presenters in the oral competition will be judged using the criteria below.

Each category is marked as: needs to improve (0 points), meets standards (1 point), or well done (2 points) for a total score out of 22.

KNOWLEDGE AND CONTENT

  • Subject matter presented so as to be appealing to a diverse audience
  • Research objectives and rationale for focus of presentation stated clearly
  • Methods & research design discussed so audience understands approach
  • Results explained clearly with critical and meaningful interpretation
  • Conclusions included clear take home message, significance, future research needs
  • Answers to questions demonstrated in depth knowledge of material and acknowledgement of audience diversity

COMMUNICATION

  • Oral: Pace, voice level, inflection appropriate
  • Written: Slides clear, good layout, graphics used effectively
  • Nonverbal: Confident, good eye contact, no distracting gestures, professional
  • Flow of information: Clear logical structure, bridging between sections
  • Organization: Adhered to time limit (10-12 minutes)

 


 

Poster Competition – Judging Criteria

Presenters in the poster competition will be judged using the criteria below.

Each category is marked as: needs to improve (0 points), meets standards (1 point), or well done (2 points) for a total score out of 22.

KNOWLEDGE AND CONTENT

  • Subject matter presented so as to be appealing to a diverse audience
  • Background information prepared audience for hypotheses and objectives
  • Research objectives and rationale for focus of presentation stated clearly
  • Methods & research design discussed so audience understands approach
  • Results explained clearly with critical and meaningful interpretation
  • Conclusions included clear take home message, significance, future research needs
  • Answers to questions demonstrated in depth knowledge of material and acknowledgement of audience diversity

  • Layout: poster is clear, good layout, graphics used effectively
  • Oral: Pace, voice level, inflection appropriate
  • Nonverbal: Confident, good eye contact, no distracting gestures, professional
  • Organization: Adhered to time limit (~ 5 minutes)
