2019 conference recap

Dear LFS community,

The 2019 conference featured 20 oral presentations and 19 posters from 8 LFS research and professional graduate programs. Thanks to everyone for making the event such a success!

The oral and poster presentation judges had an incredibly difficult time selecting the winners which goes to show that everyone did a fantastic job.

The 2019 oral presentation winners:

1st place: Patrick Pow “Measurements of greenhouse gas exchange above a conventionally managed blueberry field in the Fraser River Delta, BC, Canada.”

2nd place: Jennifer Grenz “How an Indigenous Worldview Changes Ecological Restoration: Values based land healing as an act of reconciliation to protect food security and food sovereignty in a changing climate.”

People’s choice: Maria Chen “Using a mini-ethnographic case study to understand livestock stakeholders’ perspectives on animal welfare in a large-scale Chinese pig farm.”

The 2019 poster presentation winners:

1st place: Justin Falardeau “Differential growth of Listeria monocytogenes in soft ripened cheese at refrigerated temperatures.”

2nd place: Kelsey Cochrane “Is natural folate as effective as synthetic folic acid in maintaining serum and red blood cell folate concentrations during pregnancy? A proof-of-concept pilot study.”

People’s choice: a tie! Francisca Navas Morales “Analysis of Ecuador’s “Traffic Light” labelling and its little effect on the country’s main nutrition problems”  and

Elaine Cheng “Characterization of vineyard-associated Saccharomyces sp. and phenolic profiles of Pinot Noir grapes in the Okanagan Valley.”
